AskAway

YouTube Contest

This is where we post all manner of stuff for promoting the contest. Teens post YouTube videos about how cool AskAway is and we set up a teen "council" that votes on the best video submissions and awards prizes. All to culminate during AskAway week, September 8-12, 2008.

Our First Big Press Release (thanks to Mark I. and Renee)

Please use as you see fit. If you have a copy of the original note there's been a change in the "Statewide Availability" paragraph to make sure there's no indication what so ever that the award money is coming from LSTA monies. So use this updated version please. Please let us know of any place or lists you post this Press Release, thanks.

AskAway sponsors YouTube video contest for teens

For the past two years residents across Wisconsin have turned to

AskAway-a free online service staffed by professional librarians 24

hours a day, seven days a week-for reliable answers to all sorts of

questions. Now AskAway is encouraging residents to share their positive

experiences by creating and posting short videos as a part of the “I

Love AskAway” YouTube video contest for teens and young adults.

Entries should consist of an original video that depicts the AskAway

chat service that is available to all state residents at

www.askaway.info. Videos should be 30 to 60 seconds long (longer

videos may be edited), and must either be uploaded to YouTube

www.youtube.com or submitted on DVD or CD-ROM by August 22, 2008.

Complete rules and an application form are available at

http://askaway.pbwiki.com/YouTube+Contest+Entry+Page.

To be considered, a video may not contain content that is

inappropriate, people in the video must have agreed to be filmed, and

you may not violate any library policies during the creation of your

video. All entrants also must have completed an application and signed a

release form. Winners will be chosen based on how informative and

entertaining their submission is. Youth services librarians and members

from library teen councils across Wisconsin will judge the videos.

First prize is a $150 Best Buy gift certificate and second prize is a

$75 Best Buy gift certificate. Contest winners will be announced Sept.

2, 2008. Submission deadline is August 22, 2008

The statewide availability of AskAway is made possible, in part by an

LSTA grant administered by the Wisconsin Department of Public

Instruction along with contributions from participating libraries and

systems. Like BadgerLink, AskAway is an online service that opens

the vast resources of Wisconsin’s libraries to all residents, no matter

where or when they need information.

The 24-hour-a-day AskAway service is staffed by the 24/7 Reference

Consortium-a group of hundreds of libraries across the country that work

together to provide this service-as well as local Wisconsin librarians

who contribute their time to the consortium. Wisconsin residents benefit

from this expanded service.

You can access AskAway at www.askaway.info, or through your local

library’s website.

InfoSoup YouTube contest

The InfoSoup folks, Nicolet Federated Library System, and OWLS combined, has just concluded a YouTube contest with their patrons to create videos about how great InfoSoup is. Here's the link to the contest, rules and results. Should be another really good model for us, plus they are in WI and we know them and they are likely to be involved in our teen efforts too.

http://info.infosoup.org/youtube/

Initial Renee Email post with start up questions:

I talked with Chrissy and she thought it was a great idea. She is willing to talk to our YA group and even the schools that have A.V. departments etc. She is also willing to post on YAABRs list serv. Now we need to put together rules for entering. As you brought it up Mark I would guess you already have something in mind. Please share with us and we could maybe tweak if necessary by e-mail so it can go out by the end of January. What does everyone think? ok? Did anyone else speak to their YA person who might be willing to talk to their groups and schools too ? We could just post in the library as well.

Thanks

Renee

Questions I have in no particular order

1. age restrictions? or maybe categories? restrict who can enter? if we did who and why

2. time limits? or not

3. I would urge some type of statement about tastefulness (or am I showing my age by that question :-))

4. what format acceptable? on tape? on disc? what else?

5. where do we plan to post? at our Wiki page I would expect, probably You-tube but where else? Do you think local television stations might be willing to show them? what about on our web pages?

6. prizes? where are we going to get them and who is paying for them?what would they be?

7. who is going to be judges?

8. Publicity on winners- who's going to do it and how

9. notification of winner and losers? should we have winners but a place to show all contestants?

10. time frame to get their submissions in - where would they send them?

11. electronic submissions and paper - could they download from WIKI page or would we have paper ones at the libraries? both?

12. Do we want them to add some personal information with their submissions for later publicity?

Regarding putting together rules for entering, taking a look at some libraries' YouTube contests might yield some ideas:

Concerns and Possible Road Blocks

Martha says:

According to a note I received through DPI this morning, YouTube is blocked on computers in public schools in WI. Just a point to keep in mind as we move forward with promoting the teen contest. We envisioned the public libraries as the primary focus for promoting the contest, but the fact that YouTube isn't accessible in school buildings means that school libraries won't be in a good position to help us promote the contest.

Announcing, PR, link locations discussion

Martha says:

messages posted on library/system home pages and WLA pages?

messaging options we can come up with. Any possibility that we could get

about the contest on the DPI AskAway home page, and/or any other web-based

I'm willing to explore the possibility of putting a message

As for posting a message about the contest, I will ask each of our 30

libraries to post the info on their web sites; I will also post it on

the system's home page, Extranet and blog. Our resource library has a

MySpace page targeted to teens

http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=127301788

where they might promote it too.

As for the WLA web site, Lisa Strand would be the person to ask, though

I suspect she'd be more open to posting about it on the WLA blog

http://wlaweb.blogspot.com/

rather than the web site itself. If she's

open to that option, I can create the post there myself (I usually blog

there only during WLA and WAPL conferences).

Background stuff to help us out

Here's link to the QP blog posting about the webinar where folks discussed the MTV commercial and the Florida YouTube contest idea. Check it out.

Sample Announcement

I would suggest we screen all videos for appropriate-ness, but judging and awards should come from a teen committee, INCLUSION please>

Ask a Librarian

AskAway uses QuestionPoint, a collaborative reference service created by the Library of Congress and the Online Computer Library Center (OCLC). QuestionPoint helps libraries work together to provide authoritative answers to your questions.

Ask a librarian for answers to your questions through a service provided by libraries and AskAway librarians, a group of public and academic libraries from throughout the state in cooperation with other libraries around the country. You can use either Live Chat or E-mail to ask a question.

Select Live Chat and one of the librarians on duty around the state or around the country will begin a chat session with you to answer your question or help you find the information you need. Live Chat is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Select E-mail and a Reference Services librarian from your local Library will answer your question with an e-mail reply. E-mail us anytime and we will respond as soon as possible during library hours, generally within 24 hours.
