Knowledge Base
Wisconsin QuestionPoint librarians can access the global knowledgebase to discover sources relevant to a variety of topics. In 2008 they will also have access to a local knowledgebase that will contain information particularly useful in responding to questions about Wisconsin.
Relevant Topics
The local knowledgebase will be make it easier for librarians to respond to questions from Wisconsin patrons and ti respond to questions about Wisconsin. We will be including information on how to use BadgerLink, how to navigate websites particularly relevant to Wisconsin history, government, natural resources and more.
Letting your patrons search Knowledge Bases
You can create a web search box for your patrons to search both the Global KB as well as a local KB. Here's what it looks like.
Here's the code for you to insert into your web page to make it happen:
<form method=post target="new" name="entryform1"
action="http://www.questionpoint.org/crs/servlet/
org.oclc.ask.AskPatronSearch">
Search our knowledge base of library specific information:<br>
<input type=text name="andk" maxlength="200" size="40">
<input type=hidden name=kbids value=1>
<input type=hidden name=language value=1>
<input type=submit value="Submit"><br>
</form>
And here's the link to the specific info from OCLC to make it all happen and slice and dice it however you need.

Searching the Knowledge Base
There is no direct link to the Knowledge Base from the Chat Monitor. So to search the Knowledge it's best to go to the QP librarian Home Page, which should already be in an active window on your desk top.
The easiest way to search the Knowledge Base is right from the QuestionPoint librarian Home Page. On the left hand menu, under the Knowledge Base link heading, there is a Basic keyword search box as well as a link to the Advanced Search page. Clicking on the Knowledge Base link takes you to the web areas to execute all Knowledge Base
functions.
Keywords searches usually returns a results list as you can see below. The question ID and the question link itself is listed so quick to scan for the specific question/answer you're interested in.
Choosing a specific question returns it's display where you can read the answer and copy and paste. In the navigation menu tabs you can initiate additional searches or Add to or Edit the current record, assuming you have the appropriate authorization to do so.
Other searching methodologies including Browse, which let's you choose categories and subject areas to browse through...
And Advanced searching which brings FirstSearch style advanced components to Knowledge Base searching.
Adding Records to the Knowledge Base
The best way to add question/answers to the KB is to start from an existing question that's already been answered and resides in your QuestionPoint queues. You can move almost any question from almost all of the queues. Look for the --Move To-- drop down on the right side of a question display. Drop to Knowledge Base to select and click on the right pointing arrow.
Your QuestionPoint question is then loaded right into the Knowledge Base editing page where you can fancy up the answer to your heart's content. The very most important part of which is making sure your questions is assigned to the correct Knowledge Base. See the bottom of the screen shot below.
When you add a new KB record there are many other Optional Fields you can append, including:
Category
Keywords
Subject
Subject Broad Class
Geographic Code
Language of Question
Sources Checked
Format
Finally you can also add or edit specific citations

Here's a really interesting report from the UW-Madison folks on how their 2 pronged VR service using a light weight chat and IM is going.
Other things you can do with the KB
